Interview with Guy Coheleach
Guy Coheleach is one of the most renowned wildlife artists in the world. His art displays a true passion for wildlife that is immediately apparent to anyone viewing his artwork. Coheleach has spent years abroad and in the US collecting visual references as inspiration for his work. These experiences combined with his immense talent is what yields his breath-taking paintings. His work is appreciated by art critics as well as animal scientists.
Coheleach's work has received some of the highest accolades. His paintings have received the Society of Animal Artists' Award of Excellence an unprecedented eight times. This most prestigious honor is awarded by the curators and professors of fine art from museums and universities across America. He has also received the celebrated Master Artist Medal from the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in 1983, one of only a few artists both living and dead so honored at the time.
His work is ubiquitous, having been exhibited in the National Collection of Fine Art, The White House, The Corcoran Gallery, and the Royal Ontario Museum. Visiting heads of State have received Coheleach's American Eagle print. In 1995 his exhibition was hosted by The Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh and in 1996 by the Newark Museum. Here, you can see some of Coheleach's work.
Further, PBS has done two films on Coheleach in 2006 and he has been the subject of two other films, "Guy Coheleach and the Bald Eagle" and "Quest: An Artist and His Prey," both of these have been shown on all three national television networks. Coheleach's passion for animals extends beyond wildlife and into his own home--he is an avid fan of Golden Retrievers, having had 3 Goldens. Here he speaks to us about his experiences with the wonderful breed...
The Interview
1) Guy, thanks a lot for taking the time for this interview today. I know you have a gorgeous Golden girl, Mischa. I believe you have also had two other Goldens (Lucky and Kir) previously. It seems that you are pretty hooked onto this breed. Could you tell me about a few things about Golden Retrievers that you love?
They're just great. Affectionate, gentle and loyal (to any one who will pet and play with them).
2) We feel really lucky to have the perspective of someone who has closely observed so many animals. Of course, in your professional life, you deal mostly with wild animals. Goldens, on the other hand, become pretty much family members, don't you think?
Never thought anything else.
3) How do you best relate to Mischa -- is she your baby, best friend...., or is she the boss?
Lucky and Kir lasted 18 and 17 years. Cancer killed Mischa two years ago at 13 years old. They certainly were members of the family.
Here in Florida we now have a West Highland Terrier. My wife says they don't shed and I can tell you they don't take any guff!
4) How does Mischa fit into your lifestyle? What are (were) some of Mischa's (and your) favorite things to do, places to go, people to see...?
She just hung around the studio and house all the time; whereever people were. She had 6 acres in northern New Jersey to roam if she wanted adventure.
5) Is there anything else your would like to share about Mischa? (Any funny story, any memorable incident...)
She would have been a great hunting Retriever. I would throw things into the woods and she always came right back with whatever I had touched and thrown.
Guy, I really want to thank you again for taking the time to answer some questions about your Goldens. I am truly sorry to hear about Mischa's passing. As someone who also has lost a precious Golden recently, I can empathize with what you must have gone through when each of your Goldens passed away. Your love for the magic Goldens have is quite evident in your responses.
