When people ask me about the adoption of Golden Retriever puppies and why I have chosen Goldens in general, I often wish to answer “Why Not?”
Golden Retrievers have so many wonderful qualities that it is difficult to imagine why one would not choose them. They are extremely intelligent dogs with an excellent temperament and superlative beauty.
Their unsurpassed majestic appearance makes Goldens a joy to behold. They have a gorgeous shiny coat, beautiful expressive eyes and a sturdy athletic posture.
Even more important than their appearance is their truly golden temperament. Golden Retrievers are eager to please, easily trainable and willing to work and learn. They have a gentle playfulness, form strong emotional bonds and have infinite patience with young children. These are but some of the innumerable characteristics that make the adoption of Golden Retriever puppies (or of an adult Golden for that matter) the perfect choice.
Despite all this, the adoption of Golden Retriever puppies is not for everyone.
For one thing, Golden Retrievers need quite a lot of exercise. Remember that they were bred for field work retrieving game, often from long distances. They are not suited to a totally sedentary household where they will not get regular daily exercise.
Also, Goldens shed! That beautiful coat does make its way onto your clothes, furniture and carpets. So those that pride themselves on the immaculate nature of their house may not welcome this.
Another thing to take into account that Golden Retrievers are pretty big dogs. Although they are the most gentle of creatures, their size may pose a hurdle in households who pride themselves on their collection of delicate items. In that same vein, if there is a newborn (human!) in the house, it may be wise to wait until the child is a bit older prior to considering Golden Retriever adoption.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Goldens truly need human affection and company. They love to hang out with their human family, to snuggle up whenever possible, and to participate in as many activities as they can. So they are not suitable for households where no one is home for long periods of time. They crave active companionship -- so make sure you do too!
However, if you do devote time and affection to your Golden, you will be richly rewarded. He will look up to you and adore you. You will be the center of his universe -- and he will let you know that every day! Throughout his life, he will be your very best friend.

Your Golden requires significant affection and time. If you are able to give these to him, he will give you years of unconditional love, and make an exceptional and loyal companion.
