Interview with Bobby Collins

bobby collins, comedian, golden retriever, golden retriever dogs

Comedian Bobby Collins is one funny guy! This New York native is one of the best known comedians and has had tremendous praise from everyone who has seen him in action.

Early in his career Bobby accepted the baton from Rosie O'Donnell when she left VH1's Stand-Up Spotlight. He has several cable comedy specials to his credit, and has appeared in many feature films and numerous television shows as well.

He was nominated for a CableACE Award as well as for the American Comedy Awards "Stand-up Comic of the Year." He has toured with the likes of Cher, Julio Iglesias, Dolly Parton, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett among others.

After his first ground-breaking CD “On the Inside,” his second CD “Out of Bounds” and third CD “I Wanna Go Home” were submitted for Grammy consideration. He has another CD out: the hilarious “Mr. New York.” Here, you can check out some of Bobby Collins' work.

Here are some raves for Bobby Collins and his most entertaining comedy:

The New York Times: “The most natural comedian working today.”
USA Today: “Simply one of the best comics in the country.”
Washington Post: “Bobby Collins is one of those comedians who is funny even on the phone.”
The Detroit Free Press: “Bobby Collins really is a funny guy. The man has a decided skewed view of the world.”
Cleveland Plain Dealer: “Collins is an 'everyman' who gives hysterically enlightening reports on life as we know it.”

In addition to his perfect comedic timing and superbly entertaining material, perhaps what makes Bobby Collins most endearing is his utter love for Golden Retrievers. To see the official Bobby Collins website, please click here . Read ahead to see what Bobby had to say about his dear Goldens...

The Interview

1)  Bobby, thank you so much for taking the time for this interview today.  I have heard your very funny comedy routines and have enjoyed them every time. I was so happy to learn recently that you are a Golden Retriever fan.  I understand you had a wonderful Golden named Remy who unfortunately passed away. Now you have another Golden Winston.  How did Remy and you get together? What about Winston and you?

We've always loved dogs and when my daughter came along, born with special needs (she does not walk very well or talk), my wife and I felt a Golden Retriever with their disposition and that constant smile and that protective nature was a perfect fit. We received more with Remy—he loved her, guided her and when the world took us away, he was always there.

When Remy passed on - we never thought we could have another dog like him and then came Winston. Where Remy left off, Winston filled in. His personality was more of a royal—I wipe after every walk, I'll eat when the family does, today's Sunday it's rest day—type of dog and we fell in love with him too.

Both dogs became my best friends and closer to me than the rest of the family - its all about the energy.

2)  I know you've had many Golden Retrievers. Were they quite different or overall similar in nature? Any examples?

Very similar in nature (but different in personality)--the constant smile, the lovingness , the caring, “I'm in this family and don't you forget it!” Sometimes I'd walk him and I know he did not understand why the other dogs didn't feel the same as he—we're in this all together, let's love each other, have fun and play...a gift.

3)  I've heard your comedy routines and know that you love to feature your dogs at times. What are some of your favorite Golden-related episodes? (I enjoyed the bit about the difference in how cats and dogs treat you). Which of your Goldens has provided you the most material for your performances?

Dogs add to life—Remy would see a person come over to my special daughter and would sense out their personality and know instantly if this person is not real enough to add love to her life or just putting it on. He was always 100% right—that's the gift. I wish I had it with people in life!

4)  How did you come up with your Brooklyn accent for your dogs?

I just added a voice to their personalities that people around the country would relate to. If I made them too smart - not good; too dumb - safe but not real; just right and it worked. Don't you think we're sharing the planet with a lot of different types of people - we have to start thinning out the herd!

5)How is life with Winston? How has he blended into your family? I know you have two girls, how is Winston with them? My personal experience has been that Golden's are terrific with kids, do you think so?

We have two dogs now, Winston and a mutt rescue dog Henry (he's big and black). But without Winston there to show him the ropes of fitting in the family and playing a huge role - I really don't know if it would have worked. And vise versa - Winston was getting older (he's 15) and if Henry did not come along to give Winston that spark again—again a perfect fit!

6) If you could adopt one characteristic of your Goldens, which would it be and why?

Their temperament just in general. Their patience, their loving attitude, there smile …. OK, you got me, I love them - I don't speak about my wife this way!

Bobby, I really want to thank you again for taking the time to answer some questions about your Goldens.  As someone who also has lost a precious Golden recently, I can empathize with what you must have gone through when Remy passed away.  I can also sense the excitement and enthusiasm you and your family must feel with the arrival of Winston and the magic he brought with him.
