Dog Bloat -- Causes and Prevention
As noted in the previous section, dog bloat happens when your dog's intestines become distended and twist on themselves. If a dog gets only one large meal a day, he is at greater risk. This is because the large meal causes the stomach to distend more than a small meal would.
Also if he eats his meals very fast, he is at greater risk. His rapid eating may cause him to swallow large amounts of air that become trapped in the intestine. Another thing to note is that if your dog exercises shortly after eating, then the highly distended stomach can twist on itself. This closes of the esophagus and prevents the dog from getting rid of excess food or bile by vomiting or belching.
Keeping these things in mind, do try to feed your dog two small meals a day instead of a large meal. Also wait at least 2 hours after feeding to allow your dog to exercise. These measures can help prevent bloat and promote your dog's health and well-being.
