Dog Bloating -- The Treatment
By now your know that dog bloating is a severe illness and it is a medical emergency. If you suspect your dog has bloat or torsion of the intestines, get him to the veterinary ER right away. Even a few minutes of delay can be critical in saving his life.
There are many things your veterinarian can do to improve your dog's condition and potentially even save his life. You vet can use intravenous fluids and give your dog antibiotics or steroids to stabilize his condition. He can also direct a tube down into the stomach to try to decompress the swollen abdomen. If this is successful, then the stomach contents can be emptied and the stomach may return to its regular size and shape.
If this does not work to improve the bloat symptoms, surgery may be the best alternative. Although it is quite dangerous to take such a severely ill dog to surgery, it may be the best chance he has to survive. During surgery, a surgeon can and treat or remove any adjacent damage. Often in cases of severe infection, the entire abdomen can be “washed” with antibiotics to treat the infection.
If a dog with bloat needs surgery, the earlier he gets it will determine the outcome. Every minute that bloat progresses, it causes further damage to the intestines and the surrounding organs. Often this damage can be irreparable. So, it is vital that a dog with suspected bloat get emergent and thorough treatment.
