Dog Bloating -- The Symptoms
Dog bloating is a complicated series of events that can endanger your dog's life. When the stomach gets twisted, the blood vessels of the intestine can often also get twisted. Just as the dog cannot belch or vomit because of the twisted esophagus, the arteries and veins of the stomach can also twist and cut off blood supply.
This lack of blood supply to the lining of the stomach can cause it to begin to die. Other organs also get affected. With lack of blood supply to the heart, the heart rhythm can become erratic. The liver, spleen, pancreas and other portions of the intestine can become involved. This can, in turn, release further toxins into the bloodstream.
The stomach can become further distended and at times, the stomach can rupture. This can lead to a severe infection within the abdomen and cause the dog to go into shock.
There are many symptoms that may alert you that bloat is a possibility. First of all, a dog with bloat will be very uncomfortable and restless. His abdomen will appear distended and swollen. He will have significant pain when you touch the abdomen even mildly. You may note that he is salivating excessively. Often, he may try to vomit repeatedly but nothing substantive comes out.
If there is even a mild suspicion in your mind that your dog may have bloat, please take him to the vet ER immediately, as this can be life-threatening.
