Dog Diarrhea Treatment
The treatment of diarrhea depends on the cause. We have discussed some of the potential causes in the previous pages (
definition,symptoms, diagnositics
).
If the cause is a bacterial infection such as salmonella, then antibiotics would be the appropriate treatment. If a parasite is the culprit, then de-worming will be the choice of treatment. If there is chronic diarrhea and in the unfortunate circumstance that a cancer is discovered, then oncological treatment may be appropriate.
But there are some things you could do to try to ease your dog's symptoms. In instances when the diarrhea is not too severe and there is no underlying condition that needs treatment, you may be able to do some things to ease your dog's suffering.
First of all, look closely at his diet. Are you feeding him the same amount as always? Try to limit his food intake and reduce how much you feed him for a few days. That can help quickly clear up diarrhea. Also, changing what you feed can help. I do not recommend that you change to another brand of dog food, but rather consider giving him a homemade, bland diet until the symptoms have passed. Plain rice mixed with chicken or beef stock seems to be something that most dogs enjoy, and something that does not put strain on their digestive system.
Also, make sure you are even more particular than usual to ensure that your dog has plenty of fresh water. Encourage your dog to drink water frequently. This helps in preventing dehydration that may be otherwise caused by the diarrhea.
Some believe that certain homeopathic remedies and supplements can also provide relief for dogs experiencing diarrhea. Some natural remedies that may ease the diarrhea symptoms include ginger, thyme, myrrh. I am not sure these have ever been tested like medications would be, but they are natural alternatives in mild cases. Some believe these help to reduce inflammation an therefore pain at the intestines.
The good news is that most cases, diarrhea in dogs is acute and short-lived. It usually resolves on its own as the dog's body expels the toxin that caused the symptoms. The toxin usually has entered the dog's body through ingestions such as contaminated food or water, intestinal parasites, viruses, insecticides or other poisons.
However, it is important to note that some serious conditions (even cancer) can cause diarrhea. So if you have any doubts about the symptoms your dog is displaying, please don't hesitate to contact your vet to initiate a diagnostic work-up to get the best dog diarrhea treatment.
Treatment of your Golden's diarrhea depends largely on the cause of the diarrhea. Have a low threshold to seek the help of a qualified veterinarian if your dog is having prolonged symptoms or there are any worrisome signs.
