The Best Dog Food Storage Containers

Dog food storage containers are not all the same. The best ones have several specifications that make them ideal to keep your dog's food fresh.

Below I have listed what I think are the top 10 most important points to consider when choosing a container for your dog's food. See which ones are most relevant to you and buy a container accordingly.

My specifications:

  • Airtight (to keep dry dog food from getting soggy from mositure in the air and to keep pests out)
  • Made of high-quality material (plastic is fine but not wood)
  • Appropriate size for the storage quantity (i.e. if you get 40 pound bags, it should be able to hold that much food)
  • Opening should have a locking closure mechanism (so you know when it's properly closed)
  • A wide opening (for easy filling and easy dispensing)
  • Opening should be easily accessible
  • Translucent to allow you to know how much food is left
  • Front lid should stay open when desired (convenient when filling the container or when feeding multiple dogs)
  • Stackable (useful when you are storing larger quantities of food)
  • Wheels (particularly useful when you want to move a container 40 pounds full of food!)

I have listed here several containers suitable for dog food, some for storage of dry food, some for treats, and others suitable for travel. I have to say that I have not had an opportunity to personally try out all of these. However, I have researched dog food containers quite thoroughly, and filled in the gaps in my knowledge by wading through numerous consumer reviews. I hope you find the information I have consolidated quite useful.

This little guy has absolutely fabulous reviews. The Travel-tainer has two blue lids on the sides, which double as bowls when you are traveling. It's a great way to take a little bit of food for a day or two long trip, or fir a long car ride. You can use one for water and one for food, or if you have two dogs, you can use one for each. It's a great all-in-one product.
This is a Rubbermaid product, and is a really good option for storing dry food. It keeps food fresh and free from pests. There are a couple of reviews that say this product is not completely air-tight, but that it's more than good enough for its purpose. This container is also very sturdy and compact. Also, it comes with a food scoop that is held inside the lid. Funnily enough, the colors shown in the product are different from the actual product, which is apparently tan with a red lid -- even funnier is that people like the red and tan better! One satisfied customer calls this items "sturdy, well-design, and convenient."
This Vittle Vault container comes in many different sizes -- ranging from 5 pounds through 60 pounds, so you can buy one suitable for you based upon the size of the dog food bags you typically buy. Vittle Vault emphasizes its threaded, double-gasket lid, which is supposed to provide airtight protection. All sizes except 5 lb includes a 1-cup scoop. (On 5 lb size, the lid acts as a scoop.) Also, these units are stackable.
