Planning Dog Friendly Vacations

There is nothing more fun than taking a trip with your dog -- but only if you have planned out dog friendly vacations.  Dogs possess the unique gift of becoming a completely integrated member of their human family.  I love dogs -- all of them, and especially Golden Retrievers -- and I try to have my dogs participate in as many family activities as possible.  This includes, in particular, vacations that my family takes.

But it's not always a great idea to take your dog with you.  As I have said, you need to plan out a dog friendly vacation.  What should you consider when deciding whether to take your dog with you on your vacation? If you decide to do so, what things should you pack for him?  And how will you find a great place to stay in with him? This article will provide you with tips and pointers for all these questions.

Should your doggy come with you?

Take the following factors into account when you consider whether or not to take your dog with you on any particular trip.
  • How long are you going for?
  • Are you flying or driving?
  • If you don't take your dog with you, what arrangements will you make for her?  Do you feel comfortable with them?

What should you pack when traveling with your dog?

If you  have decided to take your dog with you, here's a quick checklist to help you pack for for him.
  • Food
  • Water bottles
  • Bowls
  • Collar and leash
  • A few favorite toys
  • Some treats
  • A waistpack in which you can carry the treats on a walk or day trip
  • Plastic bags (for poop-scooping -- the all-time favorite activity!)
  • Crate (or bed)

How do you find a great place to stay in with your dog?

Needless to say, when traveling with your dog, you will need to arrange for  a place where you can stay with your dog.  There' s a big difference though, between accommodations that will simply allow your dog to stay, and those that are truly dog-friendly.  The latter make for a far more enjoyable stay, both for you and your dog.  I have seen the entire gamut of lodgings where dogs can stay -- those where the staff gives you that nasty "So you have a dog with you that we are going to have to tolerate" look to those where there are doggy biscuits for your canine companion, and where the staff and guests genuinely love dogs, and are delighted to scratch up your doggy's ears!  If you are like me, when any one praises my dog, I have a big smile on my face!
