Facts About Golden Retrievers and Their Remarkable Appearance

Although almost all qualities of Golden Retrievers are excellent, his striking appearance is perhaps the most unparalleled.

The AKC has specific guidelines for the Golden Retriever breed standard. You can see those details here . But this set of facts about Golden Retrievers and their appearance seems a bit "tabular" and to me. Below I have included a description of the most salient points. To me this represents, in less technical terms, the appearance of this most perfect dog breed.

The Golden Retriever is a majestic, extremely intelligent dog in the Sporting Group with a kind expression and an eager, self-confident demeanor.

Physically, he is beautiful, powerfully built, well-proportioned with a lustrous water-resistant coat of various shades of gold. The coat is well-suited for long periods of work over differing terrains.

The head is broad with a sturdy muzzle and strong jaws that form a scissors bite. There is a clear and well-defined indentation at the base of the muzzle. The nose is dark, usually black. The medium-sized eyes are friendly, intelligent and brown with dark rims. The ears are close-hanging, set at the level of the eyes and when pulled forward, the tips just cover the eyes. The neck is sturdy and muscular.

The forequarters are long and supported by strong-boned forelegs. The hindquarters are strongly developed with sturdy thighs. The feet are rounded, compact and well-knuckled on thick durable pads.

The back is level and strong. The tail is carried level or with a moderate upward curve and has abundant feathering on the underside. It is thick at the base and slowly tapers to the tip.

Males stand 23-24 inches from the ground to the withers (top of the shoulders) and are 65-75 pounds while females stand 21 ½ -22 ½ inches at withers and are 55-65 pounds.
