  1. Although Goldens are excellent watch dogs, the will NOT make good guard dogs. They will bark to alert an owner that somebody is coming, but will then proceed to show the intruder all of the valuables of the house (all the while wagging vigorously at their new “friend”)!

  2. Golden Retrievers are arguably the breed most favored by celebrities. It's astonishing how many famous figures have been touched by a Golden's magic. Check out the celebrity quiz .
  3. Golden Retrievers instinctively love the water, something quite distinct from several other breeds. This may make bathing them somewhat easier (but not always!).
  4. Mainly due to their everlasting sunny temperaments, Goldens score high on tail-wagging. They are easily amused and will wag at everything. You would be well-advised to keep your coffee tables free of expensive items.
  5. The first Golden Retrievers were first formally shown at the Crystal Palace Show in 1908 in England. At that time, they were listed as “Flat Coats (Golden).” See the history section.
  6. Goldens have an innate understanding of humans and their moods. They can be playful and rambunctious at times but become big cuddly teddy bears at other times (see temperament ).
  7. Golden retrievers are very intelligent and therefore one of the easiest breeds to train . That is why they score so high on dog obedience competitions.
  8. A Golden's beautiful undercoat (see appearance ) help them stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer by shedding. For this reason, one should avoid shaving a Golden Retriever. Minimize the shedding by being regular about grooming .
  9. As Golden retrievers were bred specifically with human companionship in mind, if deprived of human companionship a Golden will typically become stressed – morose or hyperactive.
  10. Originally Golden Retrievers were bred to be gundogs or hunting dogs. But in modern times, they have made a place in our hearts as being exemplary family pets and service dogs.
