Food Bad For Dogs

Some food we consider healthy for us humans is actually known to be food bad for dogs. I have listed several of the common food that should be avoided and also the reasons why. In alphabetical order, some foods to stay clear of include:



  • Alcohol—can cause coma and death
  • Avocados—have a toxin that can cause breathing trouble, abdominal pain and abnormal fluid collections around the heart
  • Cat food—too high in protein and fats
  • Chocolates/coffee/tea—these have theobromine and caffeine that can damage the heart or nervous system
  • Cooked bones—can break apart and get lodged in the throat. Can cause perforation of the gut and intestinal blockages
  • Corn cobs—can cause severe intestinal blockage
  • Grapes/raisins—can damage the kidneys
  • Macadamia nuts—can damage the digestive, muscular and nervous systems
  • Mushrooms—toxins can cause shock, severe infection and even death
  • Nutmeg—can cause seizures
  • Onions/garlic—can cause low blood counts
  • Persimmons—can cause intestinal obstruction and inflammation
  • Salt—can cause problems with blood sodium and potassium.
