When To Start
One thing we would emphasize, Start Early! A Golden Retriever puppy is smart — very smart -- and he can learn at a very young age. It just takes patience, understanding and a concerted effort on the part of the owner (that's you!).

Unlike many humans I know, dogs thrive on “work.” They will love the attention given during training sessions (not to mention the treats)! So please start early and be patient. Do bear in mind that a puppy's attention span is very short. So you must keep your training sessions for young pups very short -- about 5 minutes each. The do best with multiple, short training sessions spread throughout the day. Even for adult dogs, very long training sessions can prove be boring and ultimately fruitless.

Training Schools

The best schools insist that you teach your Golden yourself -- they will teach you how to train your dog. I far prefer these schools to those where you just hand the dog over and they will "train him for you." Training is a bonding experience that solidifies the relationship between the dog and his owner -- and there is no substitute for this bond. Ultimately, the dog listens to you because he loves you and respects you -- not because you simply said a combination of words.
