Reputable Golden Retriever Breeders

I have made a list of some promising links to Golden Retriever breeders. But before we get to that, we should talk about what to look for in Golden Retriever dog breeders.

When searching for Golden Retriever breeders, the first rule of thumb is to buy from a breeder who specializes in Golden Retriever puppies. You should look specifically for breeders of Golden Retriever puppies rather than kennels that advertise various different breeds. Specialized breeders know the breed thoroughly. This is very important as all dog breeds have unique traits and needs.

There are many breeders of Golden Retrievers and it is best to go with a reputable breeder. But what makes a breeder "reputable?"

First of all, good breeders usually participate in competitive events such as conformation dog shows, obedience trials, field trials and agility. Good breeders work hard at having superior quality dogs and are proud to show them off in competitions. These shows/trials also serve as learning experiences for the breeder as their dogs are judged impartially on numerous aspects. Golden Retriever breeders can then selectively breed the most suitable dogs — those with the right appearance , trainability and temperament to contribute optimum qualities to the breed's gene pool.

I know what you might be thinking -- "I'm not interested in competitions and agility, I just want a loving pet. Going with a breeder seems too high-flying." This is exactly what I used to think as well. In fact, my first amazing dog Aisha was from a backyard breeder. I didn't know any better then, she fortunately she turned out to be the most happy and healthy dog ever. Later I realized how much luck was involved in this.

I have realized that even if dog competitions and breed-perfect looks are not your thing, breeders are most likely to provide you with a happy and healthy family member.

I got my second Golden Daizy from a wonderful breeder who meets all the criteria I have discussed here. I was thoroughly happy with the process and wish everyone has such an experience.

Reputable breeders are very particular about the dogs they breed. Their dogs will not only have an exemplary appearance, but also have high intelligence and a beautiful disposition. The breeders will know all the details about all of their dogs. Their love for the breed should be palpable to you in your conversations with them.

Good breeders will typically have taken pains to keep the mother (dam) healthy throughout her pregnancy. When you visit the breeder, you will likely be able to see the mother and perhaps the father, grandmother or other close relations to the puppy.

Breeders pay attention to feeding the puppies the right amount and kind of food , ensuring a healthy growth pattern. The breeders will exercise the puppies adequately and groom the puppies appropriately.

A very important point is that reputable breeders will take into account the question of hereditary defects. Each breed has specific ailments common to it (such as hip dysplasia , cancer, eye defects). Breeders will preferentially breed those dogs without a lineage of early health issues to ensure optimal standard of the puppies.

When visiting breeders, don't be surprised if they have a number of questions for you. They will want to know how well the puppy will be suited to your household. They will ask similar questions to those we discussed about whether you should get a puppy.

They will want to meet your family and those in frequent, direct contact with the puppy. They want to ensure the puppy is going to a loving home that is a good fit. Also, they will provide you will all the appropriate certificates and pedigrees . You can find more detailed information on what exact paperwork to look at and what to do at the breeder's place here .

So please do the research and look into Golden Retriever breeders as they will surely be the most diligent about producing the healthiest and happiest puppies.

Here are some promising links to breeders directories . Good Luck!
