First of all, I recommend that you use two separate bowls, one for food and one for water. Using one bowl for both is cumbersome. You will have to stand and wait until your Golden has eaten his food before pouring water in. Or worse yet, you will have to pour the old water out before putting the food in. Either way, using one bowl in time-consuming. Two bowls are better than one. Some people use the single unit bowls that place the food and water right next to each other. This is okay but it is quite easy to get food particles in the water, making the water dirty. I prefer separated bowls. Also, be mindful of the size of the bowls. A Golden Retriever puppy is small but she does grow up! Adult Goldens are big dogs and so the bowls should also be large enough to hold appropriate amounts of food and water. With all the exercise and exploring he does, your Golden is really going to be hungry and thirsty. He will likely charge to the food and water bowls -- often tipping them over if they are not properly anchored. Try to get bowls that are weighted at the bottom to prevent tipping. In general I prefer round stainless steel bowls as they don't have many edges and are much easier to clean than plastic bowls. The plastic bowls may look cute and great at first, but after a few weeks of use, you may wonder why you ever bought them. The best feeding bowls for your Golden are large, rounded, stainless steel bowls that will not tip over easily.
