Golden Retriever Referrals

I have loved 4 very different Golden Retrievers for over 50 years. (My friends think I am part golden!) In the last two years I have lost two goldens. Calla was my devoted best friend, who helped me raise three children. She died peacefully in July 2008 at the age of 18 years.

After 6 months I adopted Cooper, a silly fella from a rescue. He was about 9 years old(?)--a deep red golden (my favorite!) with no history. I soon found out he had quite an extensive one, especially behavorial issues. Despite his "issues" we became great friends. He literally could never be left alone. He died suddenly two months ago from a seizure. In a way his "issues" were a blessing because I had to spend so much time with him. We packed a lot of loving into that year and a half.

I would love to share my mountaintop with another golden. I do not want to use traditional rescue groups again. How do I go about finding a 3-8 year old golden whose owners have passed away or have to go into assisted living? I tried leaving my request at veterinary practices but most were politely indifferent.

If anyone has suggestions I would be so appreciative.

Response from Golden Retriever Magic:

It is so wonderful to hear from people such as yourself who have known and loved Goldens for so many decades. Both Calla and Cooper sound fantastic in their own ways.

One avenue I may suggest for getting another Golden is the Homeward Bound Santuary which is a different type of rescue organization. Please check out the interview they did with us to understand more about them.

Another thought is to go through people who foster Goldens. This is a more atypical route but one that can be very satisfying. Please check out an interview we conducted with one such foster family.

Whichever way you go about finding your next Golden, I'm sure you find true happiness with your Golden.
