Goldens and Cancer

by Jillene
(GrandForks B.C)

Hello my name is Jill. I have a nine year old female Teva. She has lost weight not eating as much. She has got hot spots she has never had one in her life. She sleeps a lot and her hair has been falling out in clumps. I took her to the vet and had a full blood panel done on her. It showed nothing. My vet thinks it may be cancer. We are doing an ultrasound and some xrays on Wed to see if anything shows up. I am very concerned and heart-broken. She is not acting like herself and I just lost my male at Christmas to cancer.
I was wondering if anyone has any advice for me or has gone through this - could it be something else other than cancer? Any ideas or info would be wonderful. Thank you.

Jill

Response from Golden Retriever Magic:

It is always so heart-breaking to read about Goldens who are not feeling well. I really hope that Teva does not have cancer. Another possibility is thyroid disorder but I would have expected this to be picked up in the blood tests. You may wish to confirm that the vet did run this test.

So sorry to hear about your male dog that you recently lost. Unfortunately the typical survival age for Goldens has gone down over the last few decades (likely due to reckless over-breeding). Again, I really hope that Teva and you come through this ordeal quickly and safely.
