Kennel Cough Symptoms
Kennel cough symptoms can be somewhat variable. The primary symptom is a harsh, dry, hacking cough. At times, instead of a cough, your dog may look like he has retching, heaving, vomiting, sneezing, snorting or even gagging.
These symptoms of kennel cough can be particularly worse when your dog is very excited or has just exercised. These can also often be brought on when light pressure is placed on the trachea. Even though this is an infection, not all dogs with kennel cough will have fever.
The typical symptoms usually begin 3-5 days after exposure to the virus or bacteria and can last from 10-20 days. Often the symptoms can recur in instances of stress (as this puts stress on the dog's immune system). Diagnostic tests are typically not needed to diagnose kennel cough. The diagnosis is made clinically by the symptoms I mentioned above. A history of exposure to another dog with similar symptoms is helpful but not necessary for the diagnosis.
It is important to familiarize yourself with the typical symptoms of kennel cough so you can recognize whether your dog has this potentially dangerous condition.
