Kennel Cough Vaccine: Preventing Spread of the Disease

Kennel cough vaccine is available to help prevent spread of this highly contagious illness. Kennel cough is spread through the air by respiratory droplets, particularly when a dog coughs or sneezes. It can also spread through contact with contaminated surfaces such as the floor, toys, dirty food bowls etc.

Symptoms often start three to five days after exposure to the virus or bacteria.

Before we get to kennel cough treatment, it is always best to take action to prevent the infection in the first place. So how can you do this?? The best way to prevent this disease is to vaccinate your dog! The standard vaccinations include protection against most of the viruses and bacteria that cause this disease (adenovirus, distemper, parainfluenza, and Bordatella). So, please make sure to vaccinate your puppy or dog.

For prevention, it is also vital for kennels and boarding places to keep their crates and cages disinfected so as not to allow these viruses and bacteria to thrive. They should also insist on proof of vaccination before boarding any dog.

Further, as dog owners, we should learn more about kennel cough to better recognize kennel cough symptoms and prevent spread of this disease.

If you suspect your dog has kennel cough, please take her to the veterinarian as soon as possible. You should also make sure she does not interact with other dogs—quarantine her within your home. This will also help prevent spread of this disease.
