Laryngeal Paralysis

by Sylvia
(Rohnert Park, CA, USA)

My baby is 15 yrs old and just got diagnosed with LP. His symptoms have been evident for about the last two months. I just took him to the vet 3 days ago and advised me about the surgery. I will be having a consultation with a surgeon on Wednesday the 23rd but I also wanted answers from people that have gone through this with their pets. Needless to say, I joke around and tell people that I have worse separation anxiety from my Ozzy than he has with me. I would appreciate your input in regards to his age factor and any post op problems. He does not run around, he is a very calm dog. As of yet he has not yet had a breathing episode because he is an old boy. Other than normal hip arthritis and cataracts his health and heart seem good.
Any advice?

Thanks
Ozzy's basketcase Mama.

Laryngeal Paralysis
by: Anonymous

My Golden Max was diagnosed at 12 with Laryngeal Paralysis. He is not in the best of health and we did not want to put him through surgery at his age. The doctor put him on steriods, which has helped him. He cannot bark anymore, and sometimes has a wheezing sound when he breathes or exerts himself. I have chosen not to put him through the surgery, as he could wind up with aspiration pneumonia and other complications. He is now 13. If he was younger, I might have considered the surgery, but the poor old guy-- just can't stand the thought of putting him through such an ordeal. You need to do what you think is best for you and your dog.
