Training A Golden Retriever to HeelThis video shows an expert training a Golden Retriever to heel. Walks with your Golden become truly enjoyable when she learns how to follow this command. When Aisha was a puppy, I found myself being dragged around everywhere during our "leisurely" walks. I experienced a similar situation with Daizy. When I was able to train them to heel, our walks took on another meaning altogether. Dogs, and in particular Golden Retrievers, have sharp senses and so are easily distractable by a smell here or a sound there. The heel command prevents this distractability and makes for a comfortable walk for you and for her. Dog Obedience Training Tip: I would recommend that you teach a few other commands prior to this one. Start with having your Golden recognize her name (
Name Recognition
). Then teach her to
sit
and
stay
and
lie down.
After she has learned these (or maybe in parallel if she is progressing along nicely), then teach the heel command.
