Urination

by meanjean148@comcast.net
(McMurray, PA)

I have a 7 1/2 year female golden. She holds her urine so long - will this hurt her?

Response from Golden Retriever Magic:

Although Golden Retrievers are one breed, there are a lot of differences from one Golden to another. Many Goldens have trouble with excess urination but some have issues with holding their urine.

Holding the urine in for too long can be a serious concern and can damage the kidneys. Any Golden owner that is worried about their Golden holding urine in for too long should have their Golden evaluated thoroughly by a veterinarian.

The need to urinate is also different at various stages of a Golden's life. Puppies need to urinate much more frequently than do adult Goldens. To fully evaluate whether your Golden is urinating at appropriate intervals, please have a full vet evaluation.
